How It Calculates
- Average Price Per Share = Total Investment ÷ Total Shares
- Total Shares = Sum of all share quantities
- Total Investment = Sum of (Price × Quantity) for each purchase
Example
Imagine you bought the same stock three times:
- First purchase: 10 shares at $50 per share ($500 total)
- Second purchase: 5 shares at $40 per share ($200 total)
- Third purchase: 15 shares at $60 per share ($900 total)
Results:
- Total Shares: 30 shares (10 + 5 + 15)
- Total Investment: $1,600 ($500 + $200 + $900)
- Average Price Per Share: $53.33 ($1,600 ÷ 30)
